Date: October 1, 2006 Subj: Where's your purple finger?

Election results from this past March indicate that less than 10% of our Precinct's voters came out to vote. That is so hard for me to grasp as I think about the images beamed across the television of Afghanistan and Iraqi citizens stood for hours upon hours to exercise their new found freedom of casting their votes and participating, for the first time in their entire lives, in the political process. The jubilant faces of pride and honor as voters emerged from the polling places were like that of children after opening fantastic Christmas presents. The most lasting memory of all, however were the purple fingers of the voters; being held high, like badges of Honor. Of course, the voters had used a finger dipped in ink to officially mark their choices on the ballot.

Where are the purple fingers in Precinct 8 or Bolingbrook as a whole for that matter? Do we just take our freedom and democratic power for granted? Or do we not have the time or knowledge of the issues and candidates at hand? Is it perhaps easier to let other people make the hard decisions for us-like how our tax dollars are spent and by whom? On November 8th, we get yet another chance to "dip our fingers in the ink of democracy" at our local voting polls. What color will your finger be at the end of the day?
